How are we navigating our lives as a Christian in this technological age? In today’s fast-paced world, the role of technology stands as a guiding light, shaping our daily routines, and influencing almost every aspect of our lives. As believers in Christ, technology presents both opportunities and challenges. Since the COVID pandemic, technology has blossomed in the churches, as online worship services emerged as a vital avenue of connecting and fellowshiping as believers. Without a doubt, we have been immensely enriched by the gift of technology. It has dramatically transformed how the church operates. We rely immensely on technology for all aspects from communication to worship. Are we still upholding our Christian values in a world that is increasingly driven by technology? Navigating life as a Christian in this technological era requires a thoughtful approach to the opportunities and challenges presented by technology, while holding steadfast to the Christian principles. Today, we will reflect on the positive and negative impacts of technology on our relationship with Christ.
Positive Impacts of Technology
- Technology serves as a significant asset for enhancing spiritual development, spreading the message of faith, and fostering engagement with different beliefs in a globalized world. It improves the ability to engage in outreach and establish an online presence.
- With the help of technology and online apps, we can easily access church services, engage in bible study, participate in prayer meetings, enjoy devotionals, listen to worship music, as well as take theological courses, all of which contribute to deepening our faith and help us maintain a daily connection with God.
- Technology has provided us with phenomenal access to spiritual resources, regardless of where we are or what time it is.
- It enables us to stay connected with our brethren, both locally and globally, particularly those who are not physically able to be present face to face.
- Technology fosters the sharing of messages of the gospel across the globe in different languages .
- Advancement in technology can facilitate charitable activities and contributions, making it easier for individuals to support causes aligned with their faith.
- Technology has the potential to improve efficiency in administrative tasks and provide information on upcoming events in the church.
Negative Impacts of Technology
- The distractions of modern technology can hinder the spiritual journey of believers as the enticing nature of social media makes it difficult to concentrate on prayer, scripture reading, or church services. Eg. Scrolling with our smartphones and browsing on social media can lead to distractions during worship, which impacts our ability to focus.
- Technology has the potential to be addictive, resulting in lack of focus in studying the Scriptures, engaging in prayer and worshipping God.
- Technology has the ability to spread misinformation, thus posing a challenge in discerning truth from falsehood.
- Technology fosters a sense of complacency eg. Rather than attending Bible study or prayer meeting, we choose to send a text message that we can’t make it as we prefer to watch our favorite movie.
- Technology can create isolation and diminish the sense of fellowship among those who share the same faith.
Have we become so consumed with technology that we forget to serve God with all our hearts? The key is to acknowledge that while technology can serve us well, it can also dominate our lives if we allow it. What matters most is our approach to technology, characterized by grace, humility and a dedication to unity in Christ. Be reminded that technology is constantly changing, but the teachings of God remain steadfast and unchanging. It is essential for us to establish boundaries around our technology use in maintaining a healthy balance between online learning and God’s Word. Are we cognizant that some content provided by technology may not be accurate? Oh yes! So as children of God, we must be mindful of the content we consume and always ensure that it aligns with God’s Word and our faith. We must embrace technology in a way that honors God and edify others.
To wrap up things, what are your thoughts about online church compared to being there face to face? Personally, I believe both has its own distinct benefits and drawbacks. Think about it! Imagine if our retreat took place in a virtual setting! I am sure it would be disheartening as being here in person creates a sense of awe, great fellowship and mutual support. On the other hand, online church services can be beneficial as it allows individuals with mobility issues and other obstacles to gain access and connect with God. According to Romans 12:12, we are encouraged to”Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer“. I pray that our first priority is to rejoice in hope to God rather than becoming excessively engrossed in technology. As children of God, let’s use the instrument of technology to spread the message and prioritize spiritual growth.
